Bufo gutteralis

Chalk pastel - This little critter is peering out at me from one of my eight fishponds that I constructed in my own garden. They would drive my mum mad with their croaking and I'd have to catch buckets full of them and release them in a near-by park with a pond, but rest assured more would always come. One observation I made on Bufo gutteralis lends itself perfectly to experimental testing - male frogs would lek around one pond at a time, but they would prefer larger ponds that did not have any tadpoles in them. If a pond had a lot of tadpoles in it they would start lecking around a smaller pond without tadpoles, and I have no idea how they would be able to tell the difference. |
