These pages have been compiled from various news reports relevant to conservation, wildlife and environment in Zimbabwe since the beginning of the 'Accellerated Land Redistribution' campaign in 2000. They have been arranged in chronological order and are being compiled in order to achieve a more holistic view of what has happened in Zimbabwe over the last four years--from a conservation perspective. We have been somewhat selective in the posting of these reports to avoid tedious duplication, or misinformation but if there is something we have missed please contact us.

November/December 2002

9 December--Africa's biggest game park opens... The largest game park in Africa - straddling three countries - has been officially opened by the presidents of Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

9 December--Park: Zim inclusion questioned'... The inclusion of Zimbabwe into the Limpopo Transfrontier Park has been criticised by some who are concerned that the large-scale slaughter of wildlife in that country might spill over into the rest of the park, thereby jeopardising South Africa's most important wildlife asset, the Kruger National Park.

12 November-- CITES sets strict conditions for any possible future ivory sales... Santiago de Chile, 12 November 2002 – Building on an earlier consensus amongst most African elephant range states, the 160-member Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has agreed here on a rigorous regime for controlling any eventual sales of ivory.

2002--Politics and land invasions affect raptors in Zimbabwe... Zimbabwe is one of the best places in the world for raptor enthusiasts and naturalists, having a great variety of habitats and species. For many years Zimbabwe has placed a premium on its wildlife and conservation.

25 August--Zimbabwe Elephant Conservation comes at High Cost...Johannes Miyozi, a wildlife scout in the Nyaminyami Rural District in Zimbabwe, is no stranger to wildlife because daily he contends with the threat posed by a large wild animal population jostling with humans for limited living space.

14 March--Zimbabwe Hippos may be Downgraded to CITES Appendix I... Following percptions that Zimbabwe's controversial land reform and resettlement programs may be having adverse impacts on the nation's wildlife, non-government organizations are initiating proposals to the 154-nation strong Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES) to downgrade Zimbabwe's populations of elephants, hippos, lions, and cheetahs to Appendix I.
