Featured Conservation Group: The Zambezi Society
Formed in 1982, the Zambezi Society is the only conservation group focusing solely on the Zambezi river basin. It is a membership-based non-profit organisation with an operational base in Zimbabwe and an associate organisation in Mozambique. Its international partners include Fauna and Flora International, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Save the Rhino International and The World Conservation Union (IUCN).
The Zambezi Society is committed to initiating rapid, well-informed and effective action:
- To maintain the Zambezi river basin’s variety and abundance of species and eco-systems
- To conserve Zambezi wildernesses and promote the recognition of their values
- To ensure that conservation is incorporated into planning for the Zambezi river basin
- To encourage people to find ways of using the natural resources of the Zambezi basin without destroying them.
The Zambezi Society provides financial and practical support for Protected Areas and National Parks in the Zambezi River basin. Their wildlife management and conservation activities have a special focus on protecting and monitoring black rhinoceros, elephant and carnivore populations, informing government policy, training and capacity building and wilderness area conservation. The Zambezi society raises public awareness through its membership base and its periodic research reports, copies of which can be obtained from their head office in Harare. The Zambezi Society has lobbied against unsuitable development initiatives and promotes good river basin planning based on sound science.
